Throughout the history of the world, food has been grown using techniques described as organic. But in the last 100 years, conventional farming methods have increasingly relied on the use manufactured compounds such as pesticides and fertilizers, as well as using genetically bespoke seed. Organic fruits refer to produce grown using natural techniques with no chemicals or with only organic compounds.

Many countries have strict certification rules for labeling fruits and vegetables as organic. The United States, Canada and the European Union are some examples. In the United States, certification is outlined by the state departments of farming and conditions include no irradiation, no genetic modification, and most pesticides and fertilizers prohibited. The certification process can be quite costly, particularly for tiny farmers, which is partly why conventional fruit farming is still used by the majority of the growers.

Studies done on organically grown fruit have revealed numerous benefits in terms of nutrient content, flavor and shelf life.

According to research, organic strawberries have higher levels of antioxidants and ascorbic acid. Their shelf life is longer and with certain varieties the flavor and sweetness was much better.

It is unfortunate that many organic products are more expensive (sometimes up to double in price) and less gamely available than non-organic ones. Fortunately though, organic foods are now becoming more affordable as consumers are increasingly health conscious and searching for healthier food options.

Organic fruits can be found in many supermarkets and grocery stores, usually in a separate organic foods section.

Open air farmer’s markets are also another place to buy them. Some individual tiny-scale farmers open up their orchards to members of the public to come and pick and buy their own fruit for a tiny fee.

Other benefits of organic farming is that it’s healthier for the environment, it reduces the emission of greenhouse gases that cause global warming, and it maintains the biodiversity of fruiting plants. In the latter case, many commercial farming systems have reduced our fruit options to just a few genetically bespoke varieties, importance that many indigenous fruit species are in danger of going extinct.

Often times organic produce is grown by tiny, individual local farmers. Purchasing organic varieties helps to support local economies and reduce pollution caused when transporting fruits over long distances by road or air.

Organic fruit are not necessarily free of pesticides, but it seems that less of the toxins are retained in the body from organic varieties. Studies done on children have shown that the pesticide levels in the urine of youngsters who ate mainly organically grown produce was five to seven times less than for persons who ate fruit grown using conventional farming techniques. This is excellent news for parents who buy fruit for their children and weaning babies.

Some fruit have a higher tendency for pesticide residue, for example strawberries, apples, grapes, peaches, pears, cherries and nectarines. Fruits such as pineapples, papaya, avocados, bananas, kiwi and mangoes generally have minimal pesticide residues in comparison to the non-organic varieties.

Jamie Olivers campaign to improve lecture dinners has galvanized politicians and parents alike. Even the Prime Minister has got involved saying that If changes are made it will only be a topic of months before British health, education and farming could be affected for the better. It could be one of the largest food revolutions that England has ever seen. What is now looked-for is real commitment to this change and the assets from central government to back it up.

In a rejoinder to the plea from Jamie Oliver for a lecture dinner revolution, the Prime Minister has also said that lecture kitchens will be rebuilt and equipped so that food dishes can be cooked from scratch, while dinner ladies are given culinary skills to help them make appetizing menus.

From autumn 2006, lecture dinners in England will now exclude crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks and low-quality meat. Lecture children will be served at least two parts of fruit and vegetables with every meal and deep-fried food will be restricted to two parts per week. Meals that are high in salt and stout from the lecture canteen are also banned.

From a parents perspective, many want better lecture meals for their children and to swap junk food for both organic and local fresh meals but there has been pictures in the national newspapers of some parents taking dinner orders at the lecture gates and going and buying burgers, chips and other unhealthy meals and then delivering it to their children and others. This is clearly undermining what Jamie Oliver and the Prime Minister is trying to do, at lecture they have to wear a uniform and conform to certain rules, why cant this include eating green and healthful food? When they get home they can then wear and eat what they want. Its not going to kill them to eat 5 healthful meals per week is it? Wake up!!! This also reminds me of Ian Wrights (well-known ex Arsenal football player in the UK) recent TV programme about unhealthy kids, he tried his toughest to engage them in exercise to reduce their obesity levels and when he was struggling he questioned their parents to lead by example…..many of them refused!

Back to healthful meals again…the Soil Association is encouraging the use of organic and local produce in lecture meals by running a Food for Life workshop at interested schools. It is a one day workshop for key stage two pupils. It is run by the Soil Associations education department. The workshop provides children with an opportunity to consider healthful eating, local and organic food through the theme of choices.

Schools also need information on excellent practice when sourcing healthful food for lecture meals. Schools can further improve childrens diets and increase their understanding of food by means of farm visits, and classroom activities. Wouldnt it be wonderful if all schools could have gardens so that kids can see that food doesnt come just from packets or appear miraculously in shops?

To encourage kids at home to eat healthily why not make soups with organic vegetables, while the children can make their own smoothies in the blender with organic yogurt or milk and fresh or frozen fruit. I bet the kids can go the difference. All the kids in my family like organic yoghurts, and for food and drink they have organic dried fruit.

Research and Markets have announced the addition of the “Healthful Eating Market Assessment 2003″ report to their offering.

Since the early 1980s, household eating habits have been moving steadily towards healthier eating ÂÂ less stout and sugar and more fruit. This trend has been prompted by a number of factors, including encouragement from government health campaigns and marketing initiatives by manufacturers and retailers, which have had a beneficial effect on a number of markets, including organic, vegetarian and reduced-stout and reduced-sugar foods. But, the topic of healthful eating has also attracted controversy (including conflicting research findings) and in 2001 and 2002, some adverse publicity linked to ‘healthful’ food sectors such as organic food.

Predictably, the meteoric rate of growth in sales of organic food has begun to slow as the market matures: the sectors that have grown most strongly since the year ending April 2000 have been organic meat and baby food.

The market for vegetarian food has been fuelled both by an increase in the number of consumers who do not eat meat at all, and by changing attitudes towards meat among non-vegetarians. This market has seen some adverse effects due to the strong growth of the organic sector, as well as the fact that some of the less dedicated vegetarians and meat-reducers have turned to non-vegetarian organic food as a way of addressing their concerns about the safety and healthiness of factory-farmed meat. It is also the case that most organic ready meal ranges include really meat-free dishes. But, the specialist vegetarian sector has countered this with a number of launches of organic vegetarian products, and the market recovered during 2002.

The market for reduced-stout and reduced-sugar products has shown steady but unremarkable growth since 1998. General concern about obesity (in the UK and beyond) ÂÂ and in particular about its effect on health and the cost of this to the nation in terms of healthcare and sickness absence ÂÂ has meant that the Government is likely to take more active steps to encourage healthful eating in future.

Consumer research exclusive to us has revealed that consumers are generally sceptical about healthful eating information from food manufacturers and supermarkets. But, a relatively high proportion are set to pay a premium for healthful food, but the vast majority are unwilling to make sacrifices in terms of go.

The organic foods market is forecast to continue growing at a vigorous rate between 2003 and 2007, although growth will be slowed by the combination of a fall in the price premium of organic foods and a maturation of the market. The vegetarian foods market will also show considerable growth during this period, with manufacturers of specialist vegetarian foods continuing the trend of repositioning products with the emphasis on go and health benefits in an attempt to further the appeal to non-vegetarians.
